Why This Feature Matters

  • A favicon is the small icon that appears in browser tabs, bookmarks, and browsing history and it's often the first visual cue clients use to find your site among open tabs.
  • A recognizable favicon reinforces your brand every time a client returns to your website, supporting repeat visits and brand recall.
  • Sierra automatically generates the legacy-compatible file versions for you, so one upload covers modern and older browsers alike.

Before You Begin

  • Check your user permissions. Primary Managers can update the favicon by default. Manager-level users must have the Can update main Account Contact Info permission enabled in their user profile. Not sure which user type you are? See Understanding User Types in Sierra: Primary Manager, Manager, Agent, and Lender.
  • Prepare your image file. Accepted formats are .jpg, .gif, and .png. Use a square image at the recommended size of 260px by 260px.

⚠️ A square image is required for proper display. Non-square images may appear distorted or cropped in browser tabs.

  2. Scroll down to the Favicon section.

Best Practices

  • Use a simplified version of your logo or a single recognizable mark, favicons render at very small sizes, so detail gets lost.
  • Choose an image with strong contrast so it stays legible against both light and dark browser themes.
  • Preview your site in multiple browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) to confirm the favicon displays consistently.
  • Keep your favicon consistent with the branding on your website and marketing materials so clients make the connection instantly.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • The new favicon isn't showing after saving.
Clear your browser cache or open your site in an incognito/private window to see the update.
  • The favicon appears blurry or pixelated.
Confirm your uploaded image is at least 260px by 260px and square. Smaller or non-square images scale poorly in browser tabs.
  • The Favicon section isn't visible, or changes won't save.
Contact your Primary Manager to update your permissions.

FAQs

  • What is a favicon?
A favicon is the small icon that appears in a browser tab when your website is open. It helps clients visually identify your site, especially when multiple tabs are open.
  • Can I upload a .ico file?
You don't need to upload a .jpg, .gif, or .png and Sierra automatically generates the .ico version for legacy browser compatibility.
  • How long does it take for the new favicon to appear?
The change applies as soon as you save, but your browser may show the old icon until its cache refreshes. An incognito window shows the update immediately.
  • Will updating my favicon affect anything else on my site?
No, the favicon only changes the icon shown in browser tabs, bookmarks, and similar browser contexts. Your site content and branding elements are unaffected.
