Understanding Accessibility on Your Sierra Site and the Accessibility Widget

Learn how Sierra supports web accessibility through a default accessibility page and the UserWay widget.

Why This Feature Matters

Accessibility ensures all users—including those with disabilities—can access your website effectively. Sierra’s built-in accessibility tools:

  • Demonstrate a good faith effort toward compliance.

  • Help users navigate your site using screen readers, keyboards, or assistive tools.

  • Provide transparency about your accessibility efforts through a content page and feedback form.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Find the Default “Accessibility” Link

    • By default, a bold “Accessibility” link is added to your site footer.

    • This link directs to: yourwebsite.com/accessibility/

  2. Understand the Purpose of the Accessibility Page

    • Explains Sierra’s ongoing commitment to accessibility.

    • Encourages users to report accessibility issues.

    • Contains a disclaimer and UserWay widget instructions.

  3. Using the UserWay Accessibility Widget

    • Located in the bottom-left corner of most frontend pages.

    • Enables visitors to customize their experience (contrast, font size, alt text support).

    • To activate the menu, click the widget and wait for it to fully load.

  4. Modify Widget Settings (Primary Manager Only)

    • Go to Global Site Settings.

    • Customize:

      • Placement

      • Icon Type

      • Size

      • Enable/Disable the widget (not recommended)

    • Changes should be reflected in your site’s /accessibility/ page if modified.

  5. Creating Accessible Content on Your Site

    • Add alt text to all images.

    • Caption videos or provide transcripts.

    • Ensure text and background contrast is high.

    • Avoid broken links that can disrupt screen readers.

  6. Important Notes

    • Don’t delete or modify the default text on the accessibility page without consulting legal counsel.

    • Disabling the widget may reduce accessibility and increase liability risk.

    • Feedback emails can be sent to: accessibility@sierrainteractive.com.

Best Practices

  • Use default language unless advised by an accessibility consultant.

  • Test your site using tools like WAVE.

  • Keep color contrast and readability in mind when designing content.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Widget not appearing? — Ensure you are viewing a live site and the widget hasn’t been disabled.

  • Broken /accessibility/ link? — Restore the default content page or consult Sierra Support.
